Concern Over FDA Medical Reviewer ‘Revolving Door’

An analysis published in the BMJ shows that of 55 unique FDA hematology-oncology medical reviewers from 2001 to 2010, 26 left agency employment and 15 of them (57.7%) later worked or consulted for the biopharmaceutical industry. The study authors from Oregon Science and Health University say they are “concerned by these findings. The transition from regulator to advising companies seems logical, but it raises concern as to whether regulators indefatigably act in the public interest. If anything, we underestimate the extent of this phenomenon, as not all reviewers’ future careers could be identified.” The authors determined that 27 of the reviewers continued to work exclusively at FDA and two worked at FDA but held secondary appointments.
