Concerns with Macular Degeneration Guidance

Hyman, Phelps & McNamara says a client that develops drugs intended to treat neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) has concerns about an FDA draft guidance on developing drugs to treat nAMD. The firm’s comment letter says the areas of concern are the guidance recommendations for the comparator arm, the recommendation to follow both eyes at all visits, and the recommendations regarding the evaluation of endothelial cell count.

“We believe that these areas of concern, unless addressed, would not ‘foster greater efficiency in development programs for drugs intended to treat neovascular age-related macular degeneration’ and, in fact, would impede such efficiency, development, and innovation,” the letter says.
