Consider Benzedrex Design Changes: FDA

FDA says it is asking all manufacturers of over-the-counter Benzedrex (propylhexedrine) decongestant inhalers to consider product design changes that support safe use. The request is included in an agency drug safety communication that warns that abuse and misuse of the inhaler can lead to serious harm such as heart and mental health problems. “Reports of individuals abusing and misusing propylhexedrine have increased in recent years,” FDA says.

The agency is suggesting that manufacturers consider modifying the product to create a physical barrier that would make tampering with the device and abusing the drug inside more difficult. Also, it says, decreasing the amount of medicine each inhaler contains could also reduce the serious side effects if abused or misused.
