CVM Approves New NSAID for Arthritic Dogs

FDA said 3/21 that its Center for Veterinary Medicine has approved Leawood, KS-based Aratana Therapeutics’ Galliprant (grapiprant tablets), indicated to control osteoarthritis pain and inflammation in dogs. An agency release said the drug is a new treatment option for dogs with this condition. It is a prostaglandin E₂ (PGE₂) EP4 receptor antagonist; a non-cyclooxygenase inhibiting, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The agency said other NSAIDs approved for use in dogs include deracoxib (Deramaxx), carprofen (Rimadyl, Novocox, Carprieve, Quellin, Carprofen), meloxicam (Metacam, Loxicom, Orocam, Meloxidyl, Meloxicam), and firocoxib (Previcox).
