Cybersecurity Alert on Illumina Device Software

FDA has issued an alert about a cybersecurity vulnerability affecting the Universal Copy Service software in the Illumina MiSeqDx, NextSeq 550Dx, iScan, iSeq 100, MiniSeq, MiSeq, NextSeq 500, NextSeq 550, NextSeq 1000/2000, and NovaSeq 6000 sequencing instruments. The devices are specified either for clinical diagnostic use in sequencing a person’s DNA for various genetic conditions or for research use only.

The agency’s alert says that an unauthorized user could exploit the vulnerability by taking control remotely and “altering settings, configurations, software, or data on the instrument or a customer’s network.” It says that to date no reports have been received on the vulnerability being exploited. Meanwhile, llumina has developed a software patch to protect against the exploitation, it adds.
