Cybersecurity Firms Finds Device Data Breaches

Cybersecurity firm TrapX says it has found malware on medical devices at major healthcare providers across the globe. The company says the infected devices “create a backdoor security breech that puts tens of thousands of patient records at risk.”

Company president Greg Enriquez tells a San Mateo, CA, television station that his investigators found malware planted on several types of medical devices, including an X-ray printer, an oncology unit’s MRI scanner, a surgical center’s blood gas analyzer, and a healthcare provider’s picture archiving and communication system.

“These devices are in the operating room, they could be in a hospital bed,” he says. “Lives could be dependent on them and if they’re disrupted with malware or ransomware or other attacker toolkits they may not be able to do what they’re meant to do.”

The company will release its Medjack.3 report later this week at a San Francisco cybersecurity conference.
