De Novo for Antibacterial Coated Implants

FDA has granted Onkos Surgical a de novo marketing authorization for its novel antibacterial coated implants. The authorization is based on preclinical safety and efficacy data showing that the “proprietary coating does not elute and has been proven to be bactericidal, with a 99.999% (5 log) kill rate in in-vitro testing of bacteria that are commonly found in the operating room environment,” the company says. “When it comes to implant bacterial contamination and failure, patient complications may include decreased limb function, amputation, and increased rates of mortality,” it says, adding that the technology has the potential to be one of the most important advances in orthopedic medical devices in decades.
