DexCom ‘Breakthrough’ Status for Glucose Monitor

FDA has granted DexCom a breakthrough device designation for its Dexcom real-time continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system for use in the hospital setting. The designation is based on data from the company’s exploratory studies over the past seven years that found the device improves glucose control without any increased risk in hypoglycemia, Dexcom says. “During the Covid-19 pandemic, FDA allowed Dexcom CGM to be used in hospitals to help health care providers manage patient glucose levels,” it says. “What started as a response during the pandemic has shown promise as a better alternative to fingerstick blood glucose tests with greater quality of care and patient satisfaction.”
