A 7/10 VeganMed petition asks FDA to revise existing regulations and policies to require drug and dietary supplement manufacturers to clearly label whether ingredients used in their products are animal-derived or contain animal byproducts. “Under the current FDA regulatory framework,” the [petition](https://downloads.regulations.gov/FDA-2023-P-2852-0001/attachment%5F1.pdf?ref=fdaweb.com) says, “consumers who want to avoid drug and dietary supplement products that contain animal-derived ingredients due to health-related or dietary restrictions, religious convictions, or moral beliefs cannot effectively identify these products.” VeganMed specifically asks FDA to:

- revise existing regulations and policies to require drug and dietary supplement manufacturers to clearly label whether ingredients used in their products are animal-derived;
- revise existing regulations and policies to require drug and dietary supplement manufacturers to replace animal-derived ingredients with plant-based and/or synthetic ingredients when other alternatives are available; and
- confirm that the labeling of drugs and dietary supplements may include an accurate and truthful certification symbol denoting that the product(s) are free of animal-derived ingredients.

VeganMed asserts that FDA should require the labeling changes “because no labeling changes are evident after four years following an American Medical Association policy to include such information. Further, these manufacturers have better access to this information, whereas consumers often rely on unreliable or outdated resources to verify whether an ingredient is animal-derived.”
