# DOGE-Targeted FDA Lab to Remain Open

The Trump Administration is reversing an **Elon Musk** decision ([see earlier story](https://www.fdaweb.com/musks-doge-cancels-leases-on-30-fda-field-offices/)) to terminate the lease of a 52,000 square foot major FDA laboratory in St. Louis, MO. Despite its continued listing on Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) [“Wall of Receipts”](https://doge.gov/savings?ref=fdaweb.com) as saving $2.5 million annually under the lease termination, an HHS official told ***FDA Webview*** 3/5 that the lab is remaining open.

FDA says the lab is part the Office of Pharmaceutical Quality Research (OPQR), which “protects the public health by assuring the quality and availability of drugs and biologics by conducting mission-relevant research.” It also supports:

- Science- and risk-based quality assessments of regulatory submissions
- Standard, guidance, and policy development
- Pharmaceutical quality surveillance, and
- Rapid responses to public health issues

According to FDA’s Web site, OPQR conducts laboratory research that supports quality assessments, inspections, quality standards and policy development, and surveillance. It also .

- Provides advice and collaborative research opportunities and scientific training for FDA staff on pharmaceutical quality, comparability/biosimilarity/interchangeability, pharmaceutical equivalence, and bioavailability/bioequivalence issues, including manufacturing, formulation, analytical testing, and modeling.
- Participates in relevant quality assessment and policy development activities.
- Supports FDA laboratory science needs including coordination of extramural research through contracts or grants.
