Draeger Recalls SafeStar 55 Breathing Filter

Draeger has recalled (Class 1) one lot (#LT2103) of its SafeStar 55 Breathing System Filter because a manual inspection process revealed that some defective filters, including several that may be partially obstructed, were inadvertently distributed instead of destroyed. The filter, which is used as part of a ventilator when a patient is under anesthesia or needs breathing assistance, is intended to reduce contaminants, such as bacteria, other micro-organisms, and small particles, from reaching the patient. “If the filter on a ventilator or breathing system is obstructed, oxygen may not flow properly to the patient,” a recall notice says. “That lack of oxygen (hypoxia) can have serious effects including death.” To date, one complaint and one injury associated with the use of the has been received.
