# Drug Derived from Pot Approved for Seizures

FDA has approved a GW Research NDA for Epidiolex (cannabidiol) oral solution for treating seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, in patients two years of age and older. This is the first FDA approval of a drug based on a purified substance derived from marijuana.

Approval was based on data from three randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials involving 516 patients with either Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome, according to an [FDA release](https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm611046.htm?utm%5Fcampaign=FDA%20approved%20Epidiolex%20%28cannabidiol%29%20oral%20solution&utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fsource=Eloqua). Epidiolex, taken along with other drugs, was shown to be effective in reducing the frequency of seizures when compared with placebo. The product must be dispensed with a patient Medication Guide that describes important information about the drug’s uses and risks, it says.
