Edwards Recalls Miller Balloon Atrioseptostomy Catheter

Edwards Lifesciences has recalled its Miller Balloon Atrioseptostomy Catheter and Fogarty Dilation Atrioseptostomy Catheter due to difficulty in balloon deflation after deployment, which may lead to balloon fragmentation or detachment upon attempted retrieval. A recall notice says the company received reports of balloon fragmentation or detachment, which may cause damage to the heart, the inferior vena cava, or the femoral and iliac veins. One serious injury was reported in which an infant underwent a successful surgical procedure to retrieve a detached balloon, the notice says. The devices are used to enlarge the opening between the two upper chambers of the heart to increase a baby’s oxygenated/deoxygenated blood mixing.
