Essure Issues Web Page Updated

FDA has updated with 2024 information the Web page it maintains on issues with the withdrawn Bayer Essure implanted birth control device. FDA says it received 803 medical device reports on Essure in 2024, significantly lower than the 3,626 reports received in 2023. It was the lowest number of annual medical device reports on the device since it was withdrawn in 2019.

“The nature and severity of the reports in 2024 remain consistent with prior years,” the page says. Some 27% of all submitted reports cited litigation, down from 76% in 2023. In 2024, the update says, 74.8% of reports received used terms related to device removal, down from 93.9% in 2023.
