A plan to end all use of dental amalgam in the European Union (EU) by 2022 was agreed to last week in Berlin, Germany, by representatives of EU governments, dentistry, environmental organizations, health professional associations, and consumer groups from across the continent, according to Washington-based Consumers for Dental Choice national counsel **Charles G. Brown**. In a 12/5 release, Brown, who keynoted the meeting and is also president of the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry, said the EU has already committed to banning amalgam use in children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers by next July.

“That was Act One,” Brown’s statement says. “Now in Act Two, we’re going for a complete amalgam ban....for everyone!” Last week’s “Summit to Plan the End of Amalgam in Europe” issued a two-page document entitled [*Berlin Declaration to End Amalgam Use in Europe by 1 July 2022*](https://mercuryfreedentistry.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/berlin-declaration-to-end-amalgam-use-in-europe-by-2022.pdf?ref=fdaweb.com) that notes that the EU dentistry is responsible for 19% of the world’s mercury consumption. It vows to extend its efforts to governments and “other stakeholders in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Island States to accomplish the same goal.”

FDA has consistently declined to restrict dental amalgam, fighting Brown’s efforts in federal court and declaring amalgam safe and effective in a [controversial 2009 final rule](http://www.fdaweb.com/login.php?sa=v&aid=D5112386&searchWords=FDA%20amalgam%20Class%202&cate=S&stid=%241%24c64.%2Fh0.%24%2FoaCvllF0hdvNJHJ6e7g51) classifying it as a Class II medical device.
