# Ex-Sales Rep Sentenced to 4 Years Over Fraud

A former Aegerion Pharmaceuticals sales rep has been sentenced to 54 months in prison for using the identities of physicians to carry out insurance fraud to help meet his performance bonuses. **Mark Moffett** (Springfield, IL) had been convicted 12/2019 by a federal jury of nine counts of wire fraud and six counts of aggravated identity theft.

“Mr. Moffett exploited his personal relationships with medical staff, stole doctors’ identities, falsified medical documents and deceived insurance companies – all in pursuit of sales bonuses,” according to a Justice Department [release](https://click.connect.hhs.gov/?qs=31818bf73dd4da95518c408dc7fd0074e3752bcccd24fc0a4d8eeba6cfeed1c7614b8fc462ae198cbfca5fca8337051f099b20800028585b&ref=fdaweb.com). The scheme was perpetrated 2014-2015 and involved Aegerion Pharmaceuticals’ cholesterol drug Juxtapid.

Juxtapid, which is approved only to treat high cholesterol in patients with a rare genetic disease called homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, costs $300,000 per year. “Moffett obtained fraudulent prescriptions and falsified numerous documents, including statements of medical necessity and other insurance documents,” the government contends. This included false patient test results, false clinical histories and false diagnoses... He was paid bonuses by Aegerion of up to $11,000 for each prescription of Juxtapid.”
