# Eyeglass Lenses OK'd for Pediatric Nearsightedness

FDA has granted Essilor a *de novo* marketing authorization for its Stellest eyeglass lenses, which are designed to both correct vision and slow the progression of pediatric myopia (nearsightedness). The lenses are indicated for children aged 6 to 12 years at the start of treatment, with or without astigmatism.

“Today’s authorization brings to market a treatment option that may meaningfully reduce the likelihood of severe eyesight issues later in adult life, while also being easier to use and lower risk than contact lenses,” CDRH director **Michelle Tarver** is quoted in a release as saying. 

FDA says the lenses use a central clear zone surrounded by rings of tiny raised dots — known as peripheral lenslets — that alter peripheral light focus to help slow disease progression. In a two-year clinical study, the lenses reduced myopia progression by 71% and slowed eye elongation by 53% compared with standard single-vision lenses. No serious adverse events were reported, though some children experienced visual effects such as blur or halos, it says.
