False Positives With Abbott Covid Test: FDA

FDA has issued an alert about the potential for false positive results with Abbott Molecular’s Alinity m SARS-CoV-2 AMP Kit and Alinity m Resp-4-Plex AMP Kit. False positive results may be related to current mixing parameters of the polymerase chain reaction mixture that may result in potential overflow that could carry over into neighboring wells in the assay reagent tray, an agency notice says. “Overflow into the wells of true negative samples that are positioned near positive samples in the assay tray could produce false positive results,” it says. FDA recommends that users consider retesting positive patient specimens performed in the last two weeks with an alternate authorized test.
