# Farxiga OK’d to Reduce Heart Failure Hospitalizations

FDA has approved AstraZeneca’s Farxiga (dapagliflozin) to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with Type-2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors. Approval is based on data from the DECLARE-TIMI 58 cardiovascular outcomes trial. The first-in-class, oral once-daily sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor is indicated as both monotherapy and as part of combination therapy to improve glycemic control.

DECLARE-TIMI 58 showed that Farxiga significantly reduced the risk of heart failure-related hospitalization or cardiovascular death versus placebo by 17%, the company says. The treatment benefit was consistent across patient subgroups, it adds.
