Fast Track Status for Axsome Depression Drug Combo

FDA has granted Axsome Therapeutics fast track status for AXS-05 (bupropion and dextromethorphan in combination) for treating treatment-resistant depression. The therapy is currently being evaluated in the STRIDE-1 study, a Phase 3, randomized, double-blind, active-controlled trial. AXS-05 uses Axsome’s technology of combining the two drugs. The company says dextromethorphan is an NMDA receptor antagonist, sigma-1 receptor agonist, and inhibitor of the serotonin and norepinephrine transporter. Bupropion works to increase the bioavailability of dextromethorphan, and is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor, and a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist.
