Fast Track Status for Prolong Stroke Drug

FDA has granted Prolong Pharmaceuticals a fast-track designation for PP-007 (PEGylated carboxyhemoglobin, bovine) and its use for treating acute ischemic stroke. The company says the drug has been shown to open collateral vessels, selectively deliver oxygen to hypoxic neurons, and reduce inflammation in stroke victims. PP-007 is currently being evaluated for safety and efficacy in an ongoing U.S.-based clinical trial, HEMERA-1. PP-007 is described as a polyethylene glycol-ylated bovine carboxyhemoglobin gas transfer molecule that is administered via intravenous infusion.
