# Favored Vaccine Candidates Got Public Funding: Report

A Public Citizen [analysis](https://www.citizen.org/article/the-peoples-vaccine/?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=48fff7d9-7766-4b56-8062-9a4d9886b20a&ref=fdaweb.com) finds that all five of the Trump administration’s short-list picks for a Covid-19 candidate vaccine have benefited from substantial public funding. A [news release](https://www.citizen.org/news/public-funding-drove-development-of-all-five-white-house-vaccine-picks/?ref=fdaweb.com) from the advocacy group identifies the vaccine manufacturer candidates as AstraZeneca (with Oxford University), Moderna (with the National Institutes of Health), Johnson & Johnson, Merck (with IAVI), and Pfizer (with BioNTech).

Public Citizen says it has joined with Oxfam and hundreds of other organizations in calling for transparency, affordability conditions, and vaccine technology transfer so that a safe and effective vaccine can be produced by qualified manufacturers around the world and made accessible to all.

“We have no idea what conditions, if any, the Trump administration has required of drug corporations in exchange for billions in taxpayer dollars,” says Public Citizen law and policy researcher **Zain Rizvi**. “BARDA (the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority) must publish its contracts to ensure the public’s interests, not drug manufacturers, are protected.”
