# FDA 5-Year Plan to Treat Diseases Like ALS

FDA has published its “Action Plan for Rare Neurodegenerative Diseases including Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis,” a five-year plan developed to meet a requirement in the Accelerating Access to Clinical Therapies for ALS Act. The [document](https://downloads.regulations.gov/FDA-2022-N-1279-0001/attachment%5F1.pdf?ref=fdaweb.com) says it will advance innovation that promotes and accelerates medical product development to treat rare neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS.

“This action plan has been developed consistent with provisions in the Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act and may evolve over time,” the plan says.

FDA says that executing the ALS science strategy in the plan will enhance the agency’s ability to address substantive issues in ALS drug development, deepen its scientific expertise to enhance regulatory decision-making, and promote collaboration with external stakeholders. “The ALS science strategy will serve as an example for how FDA can systematically and strategically foster and advance drug development for rare neurodegenerative diseases,” it concludes.
