FDA Advisors Back Greater Entresto Use

Members of the FDA Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee has voted 12-1 that Novartis’ Entresto (sacubitril/valsartan) is worthy of an expanded indication to treat heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, even though a trial designed to prove efficacy for this patient group narrowly missed the mark. The American Journal of Managed Care reports that Novartis pursued the expanded indication based on evidence within subgroups in the trial and data from other studies.

Entresto is currently approved for patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

The journal report says advisory committee members differed on how to word a new indication or what other evidence might be needed, leaving it to FDA to define new patients for the drug.
