FDA Alert on Neurovascular Embolization Coil Imaging

FDA is alerting healthcare providers to the potential for increased “image artifact” or image voids associated with magnetic resonance angiography imaging for patient follow-up of certain post neurovascular embolization coil procedures. The coils are used in treating brain aneurysms and other vascular abnormalities. “As aneurysms treated with coils may have residual filling or may recur, putting the patient at risk for late hemorrhage, follow-up imaging is performed when necessary post procedure,” an agency letter says. It recommends digital subtraction angiography as the preferred method to be used for imaging aneurysms after coiling.
