# FDA Alert on Pfizer/Hospira Drug Shortages

FDA is alerting healthcare professionals about an ongoing shortage affecting several injectable drugs made by Pfizer’s Hospira unit, including [sodium bicarbonate injection](http://fda.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d82%3b296-%3eLCE38%2b87%3e7-GLCE17.6&RE=MC&RI=4528954&Preview=False&DistributionActionID=65640&Action=Follow+Link&ref=fdaweb.com) (vials and syringes), [dextrose 50% injection](http://fda.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d82%3b296-%3eLCE38%2b87%3e7-GLCE17.6&RE=MC&RI=4528954&Preview=False&DistributionActionID=65639&Action=Follow+Link&ref=fdaweb.com) (vials and syringes), and emergency syringes of other drugs, including [epinephrine](http://fda.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d82%3b296-%3eLCE38%2b87%3e7-GLCE17.6&RE=MC&RI=4528954&Preview=False&DistributionActionID=65638&Action=Follow+Link&ref=fdaweb.com), [calcium chloride](http://fda.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d82%3b296-%3eLCE38%2b87%3e7-GLCE17.6&RE=MC&RI=4528954&Preview=False&DistributionActionID=65637&Action=Follow+Link&ref=fdaweb.com) and [atropine sulfate](http://fda.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d82%3b296-%3eLCE38%2b87%3e7-GLCE17.6&RE=MC&RI=4528954&Preview=False&DistributionActionID=65636&Action=Follow+Link&ref=fdaweb.com). Pfizer says the shortage is caused by manufacturing, distribution and third party delays, according to the [agency alert](https://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm563378.htm?ref=fdaweb.com).

“We are working closely with Pfizer to resolve these critical shortages by addressing the underlying causes,” FDA says. “The agency is working to relieve these shortages through a variety of measures, including finding alternative manufacturers of these drug products. FDA continues to explore [all available options](http://fda.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d82%3b296-%3eLCE38%2b87%3e7-GLCE17.6&RE=MC&RI=4528954&Preview=False&DistributionActionID=65635&Action=Follow+Link&ref=fdaweb.com), which may include expediting review of applications or other submissions, or considering temporary regulatory flexibility for alternative sources.”
