FDA Approves 1st Neurotrophic Keratitis Drug

FDA has approved Dompe Farmaceutici’s Oxervate (cenegermin), the first drug approved for treating neurotrophic keratitis, a rare corneal disease. An agency statement says the drug’s safety was studied in 151 patients in two eight-week studies. Across both studies, the agency says, complete corneal healing in eight weeks was demonstrated in 70% of patients treated with Oxervate, compared to 28% of patients treated without the drug’s active ingredient.

The most common adverse reactions in patients taking Oxervate are eye pain, ocular hyperemia, eye inflammation, and increased lacrimation.

The drug was granted priority review designation and orphan drug designation.
