FDA Approves Amphastar Generic Glucagon

FDA has approved Amphastar Pharmaceuticals’ generic glucagon for injection, 1mg/vial packaged in an emergency kit, for treating severe hypoglycemia that may occur in patients with diabetes. An agency statement says the drug also is indicated as a diagnostic aid in the radiologic examination of the stomach, duodenum, small bowel, and colon when diminished intestinal motility would be advantageous. It is the first generic glucagon for injection to be approved by the agency.

The statement says the generic glucagon is a synthetic version of human glucagon. The most common side effects associated with glucagon for injection are nausea and vomiting, a temporary increase in heart rate, and redness and swelling at the injection site.
