FDA Approves First Advair Diskus Generic

FDA has approved the first generic version of the GlaxoSmithKline Advair Diskus (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol inhalation powder) for twice-daily treatment of asthma in patients aged four years and older and maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction and reducing exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The generic inhaler will be manufactured by Mylan in three strengths, according to an FDA announcement.

The agency says that in 2013 it issued a draft product specific guidance for proposed generic drug products referencing Advair Diskus which, among other things, provides bioequivalence recommendations and formulation and device considerations.
