FDA Authorizes 1st Covid DTC Test

FDA has authorized LabCorp’s Pixel Covid-19 Test Home Collection Kit for direct-to-consumer use without a prescription by an individual age 18 and older. An agency statement says the kit allows individuals to self-collect a nasal swab at home and send the sample to LabCorp for testing. Positive or invalid test results are delivered to the user via a phone call from a healthcare provider, the agency says, while negative results come through e-mail or an online portal.

The kit can be purchased online or in a store without a prescription. FDA says the kit is intended to enable users to access information about their Covid-19 infection status that could aid with determining if self-isolation is appropriate and to assist with healthcare decisions after discussion with a healthcare professional.
