FDA Awards 12 Grants for Rare Disease Studies

FDA has awarded 12 new clinical trial research grants totaling more than $18 million over the next four years to help develop medical products for patients with rare diseases. The funding helps support early-stage development activities targeting rare diseases that don’t have effective treatments. “By providing seed capital, these FDA-administered grants enable researchers to prove out important concepts,” an agency release says. For example, Alkeus Pharmaceuticals received $1.75 million for a Phase 2 study of ALK-001 for treating Stargardt disease, and Arizona State University received $2 million for a Phase 2 study of oral vancomycin for treating primary sclerosing cholangitis.
