# FDA, CDC Working on Plan to Reopen Inspections

FDA commissioner **Stephen Hahn** says that while an agency [moratorium](https://www.fdaweb.com/fda-postpones-domestic-foreign-inspections-indefinitely/) on on-site domestic and foreign facility inspections remains in place, the agency is working with the Centers on Disease Control “to develop a process that would govern how and where to return to on-site facility surveillance inspections in accordance with the gating criteria outlined in the White House [Guidelines for Opening Up America Again](whitehouse.gov/openingamerica).”

In a 5/11 [statement](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-updates-surveillance-inspections-during-covid-19?ref=fdaweb.com), Hahn says he expects the process would be a phased approach driven by scientific data. “Although inspections are critical,” he writes, “they are one part of a robust and multi-pronged approach to overseeing the safety and quality of FDA regulated products. Safety and quality must be part of the daily routine at any regulated facility for their products to be high quality and reliably suitable for the U.S. consumer.”
