# FDA Challenges Illicit Trade Workshop Attendees

Speaking 9/15 at an FDA/Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development workshop on illicit trade in health products, FDA associate commissioner **Mark Abdoo** [challenged](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/speeches-fda-officials/remarks-associate-commissioner-mark-abdoo-fda-oecd-workshop-illicit-trade-health-products-september?ref=fdaweb.com) those present to consider what a global coalition that can explore opportunities for collaboration and identify concrete solutions, including at the policy level, might look like, given limited resources and shared responsibilities. “I hope that when we wrap up our discussions,” he said, “…we will have begun building and strengthening our strategic alliances and identified the best practices reported by the diverse groups represented here.”

Abdoo, who directs the FDA Office of Global Policy and Strategy, said illicit trade is a severe threat that not only damages economic growth but also undermines good governance, the rule of law, and trust in government. “For FDA and our regulatory partners,” he said, “illicit goods that enter our marketplace can pose serious health and safety consequences, including death.”
