FDA Clears Bariatric Surgery Clamp

FDA has cleared a Standard Bariatrics 510(k) for the Standard Clamp, a disposable laparoscopic surgical clamp that is intended to assist surgeons performing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, said to be the most common and effective weight loss surgery. The company says that more than 60% of patients seeking a surgical solution to weight loss choose the sleeve gastrectomy. The device is designed to clamp the entire length of the stomach, enabling surgeons to plan and hold the staple line prior to dividing the stomach during the procedure. “Without the Standard Clamp, surgeons must freehand stapling producing inconsistent results,” the company says.
