FDA Clears Zeiss Medical’s Bipolar Forceps

Zeiss Medical Technology has gained 510(k) clearance for MTLawton, disposable bipolar forceps made from a copper-base alloy that potentially reduce tissue adhesion and subsequent charring during dissection of tissue. Zeiss Medical says the forceps also feature an extended shaft to reduce visual restrictions in the surgical field. and help surgeons to be efficient during electrosurgical procedures.

The company says bipolar forceps are used for hemostasis and tissue separation. “When coagulating tissue, the high heat at the tips of the electrosurgical instruments can cause the instruments to stick to the tissue,” it says. The copper-based allow helps heat conduct away from the silver-plated tips faster, it adds, and thereby reducing tissue adhesion and charring.
