FDA Covid Lessons Learned

FDA acting commissioner Janet Woodcock says that the most important lesson learned from the experience of the Covid-19 pandemic is that better research coordination is needed so data are as useful as possible. Speaking on a virtual panel convened by the Milken Institute, Woodcock said that much of the research conducted during the pandemic has involved small trials and duplication that yielded little useful data and potentially could have been harmful. “We need better coordination in a global emergency so we can learn faster,” she said.

A second lesson Woodcock said FDA has learned is that clinical research must be moved into communities. “If there is no research infrastructure where people are used to getting their healthcare,” she said, “we won’t reach them. Many people can’t be part of clinical trials and that’s not right.”
