FDA Denies Professor’s Tolvaptan Petition

FDA has denied a 2/12/20 petition submitted by an Ohio State University College of Medicine emeritus professor asking the agency to revoke its approval of tolvaptan (Osaka’s Jynarque) for treating autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. The petition says FDA approval should be revoked because the drug is of “negligible efficacy,” the supporting studies were flawed, the agency medical reviewers overlooked the drug’s shortcomings, and the drug is dangerous.

In its denial letter, FDA says the petition did not present new evidence or information to support the idea that tolvaptan should not have been approved or to support that its approval should be withdrawn at this time.
