# FDA Denies Vaccine Safety Petition

FDA has denied a 2/25/09 petition submitted by a physician asking that the agency “recall all vaccines that contain ingredients that have not been shown to be safe.” The agency denial [letter](https://www.regulations.gov/contentStreamer?documentId=FDA-2009-P-0122-0004&contentType=pdf&ref=fdaweb.com) says that some of the contentions raised in the petition were substantially similar to those in an 8/10/07 petition from the Coalition for Mercury-Free Drugs that FDA answered on 11/21/08\. Some portions of that response were incorporated in the response to the 2009 petition.

The letter says the agency has factual, scientific, and legal reasons for denying the petition. “The vaccines you identify, like all FDA-approved vaccines, were demonstrated by the sponsor and determined by the agency to be safe at the time of approval,” the response says. “You have not presented evidence that any of the vaccines at issue are currently unsafe. Based on these facts, the agency has determined that these vaccines do not present ‘an imminent or substantial hazard to the public health’ … and do not meet the legal standard for recall.”
