# FDA Developed New Covid Drug Surveillance: Study

CDER researchers say the emergence of a variety of drugs to treat or prevent Covid-19 highlighted the need for FDA to move beyond routine pharmacovigilance practices to rapidly identify emerging safety concerns. In an article published in *Drug Safety*, the researchers [report](https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s40264-022-01256-2.pdf?pdf=button&ref=fdaweb.com) the agency evaluated over 20,000 adverse event cases from multiple data sources with drugs used to treat or prevent Covid-19 during the first two years of the pandemic, resulting in the identification of safety issues and subsequent actions to protect the health of Americans during the pandemic.

“Establishing collaborations and leveraging new data sources including near real-time data were essential in FDA’s response to the pandemic,” the staffers write.
