FDA Explores AI Image Analysis for Complex Drugs

FDA is exploring whether it can enter into a five-year contract with an entity that can perform “non-invasive high-resolution imaging and artificial intelligence image analysis to characterize freeze-dried pharmaceuticals and complex drug products to understand the impact of advanced manufacturing techniques, formulation, and process parameters on product quality and performance.” A government notice says CDER’s Division of Product Quality, which conducts research to advance the adoption of emerging technology in pharmaceutical manufacturing, is seeking a contract service for this technology to measure and simulate physical and microstructural parameters, and correlate measured and simulated parameters with product performance and process parameters. The notice, which can be viewed here, does not offer additional details about the research.
