# FDA Extends Expiration on Covid Tests in Florida

FDA has approved a request from the Florida state government to extend the expiration date on hundreds of thousands of expired Covid test kits by three months into March. *Florida News* [reports](https://wflanews.iheart.com/featured/florida-news/content/2022-01-12-desantis-fda-extends-expiration-of-up-to-1-million-covid-tests/?ref=fdaweb.com) the state’s Division of Emergency Management has between 800,000 and one million test kits that had expired last September due to lack of demand. The state had already received permission to extend the expiration date to the end of December, the report says.

Florida Gov. **Ron DeSantis** said the kits are not for at-home use and will be sent to county health departments, hospitals, long-term care facilities, emergency management offices, and public safety agencies for use by professionals.

DeSantis said his agency needed FDA to say that the tests would still be accurate and “it took FDA a long time, but it takes them a long time to do everything.”

An FDA spokesperson told *Florida News* that “ongoing stability studies” demonstrated that the kits were still accurate and usable.
