FDA Extends J&J Covid Vaccine Storage Time

With some doses of the Johnson & Johnson one-jab Covid-19 vaccine nearing their expiration date, as vaccination slows in the U.S., FDA has increased the approved refrigerated storage time from 3 months to 4.5 months. In a statement, the company acknowledged the agency’s action and said it had been based on data from ongoing stability assessment studies.

CNN quoted former FDA commissioner Mark McClellan, now a J&J board member, who said it is not known how long the vaccines can last when stored. “The J&J vaccine is one you can refrigerate for a long time, but as part of this emergency we weren’t able to take the time to see just how long they could last,” McClellan said.
