FDA Flags Evolus Instagram Promotion for Jeuveau
FDA’s Office of Prescription Drug Promotion (OPDP) has cited Evolus over an Instagram promotion for wrinkle treatment Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs), saying the post exaggerated the drug's effectiveness and onset of action while minimizing serious risks. OPDP noted that it had raised similar concerns with Evolus in 2019 regarding promotional claims about Jeuveau’s onset of effect.
In a just-posted 9/28 untitled letter, OPDP said a patient testimonial and accompanying claims misleadingly suggest Jeuveau could make frown lines “gone,” provide “complete results” and produce meaningful results within two days. The agency said those representations were not supported by data used to establish the product’s effectiveness.
Jeuveau is approved for temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate-to-severe glabellar lines in adults. Its pivotal studies used a primary efficacy assessment at Day 30. FDA said the Day 2 results highlighted in the Instagram promotion came from an exploratory endpoint with important statistical limitations.
OPDP also took issue with a presentation that described Evolus as “blurring the lines” between products found in a consumer's beauty bag and treatments performed in a medical setting. FDA said the presentation misleadingly likened the prescription injectable to an everyday cosmetic product, despite the need for proper administration by a healthcare provider and the drug's serious risks.
Jeuveau carries a Boxed Warning for distant spread of toxin effects. FDA said risk information appeared only near the end of the Instagram reel and was not presented with prominence comparable to the product’s benefits.
