# FDA Grand Rounds Alzheimer’s Webcast

The next FDA Grand Rounds Web cast is scheduled for 1/11 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on the topic “Ethnicity- and Gender-Related Differences in Alzheimer’s Disease. Presenting will be National Center for Toxicological Research research psychologist **Sherry Ferguson** and research biologist **Vijayalakshmi Varma**.

“Better understanding of ethnicity and gender differences involved in the cause and progression of Alzheimer’s disease could contribute to better drugs and other types of interventions to slow the disease progression,” the agency [announcement](https://www.fda.gov/scienceresearch/aboutscienceresearchatfda/ucm486711.htm?ref=fdaweb.com) says. The presentation will discuss research into protein levels in post-mortem African American and Caucasian brain tissue from both genders to explore ethnicity- and gender-related differences. The selected proteins include those thought to be critically involved in Alzheimer’s disease. They were examined in samples of the middle temporal gyrus that were matched for age at death since this region is critically involved in language processing and generation and has been shown to be significantly affected by Alzheimer’s.
