# FDA, India Stop 500 Illicit Product Shipments

FDA says that a January enforcement operation conducted with the government of India stopped some 500 shipments of illicit and potentially dangerous unapproved prescription drugs and combination medical devices from reaching American consumers. An FDA [statement](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-takes-action-indian-government-protect-consumers-illicit-medical-products?ref=fdaweb.com) says Operation Broadsword, the first bilateral enforcement operation conducted with India, targeted packages entering the U.S. through an international mail facility from 1/28 through 1/30.

Investigators from both countries examined more than 800 shipments, FDA says, and identified about 50 different FDA-regulated products, including medications intended to treat and/or mitigate serious diseases such as various forms of cancer and HIV.

Many of the shipments, which included opioid drug products, had been transshipped through third-party countries to conceal their point of origin and avoid detection.
