# FDA Lawyer Moves to Oversee Drug Compounding

FDA Office of Chief Counsel (OCC) drugs counselor **Julie Dohm** has been named CDER senior science advisor for compounding. In this capacity, she will be the agency lead on compounding, developing and managing teams to implement legislation, perform inspections, prepare enforcement actions, develop policy, and conduct outreach to stakeholders. For most of her tenure at OCC, Dohn was a civil litigator, representing FDA with the Department of Justice in affirmative, defensive, and third-party litigations at the trial and appellate levels. Most notably, she has been involved with First Amendment challenges to FDA’s regulation of approved drugs for unapproved uses; challenges to FDA’s exercise of enforcement discretion with respect to imports of drugs for use in compounding and the death penalty; Supreme Court cases concerning the interaction between federal laws relating to drug and food labeling and state laws; and enforcement actions involving violative drugs, medical devices, and foods. Dohn has a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, a doctoral degree in biology from Johns Hopkins University, and bachelor’s degrees in biochemistry and chemistry from the University of Chicago.
