# FDA Monitors Heparin Makers Due to Swine Fever

FDA [says](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/current-supply-heparin-us-market-not-impacted-african-swine-fever-china?ref=fdaweb.com) that heparin manufacturers are reporting that African swine fever in China is not affecting the drug’s manufacturing and distribution to the U.S. market. The blood thinner is used as a treatment for heart attack patients, and it is often prescribed to patients before and after certain surgeries to prevent blood clots.

FDA notes that the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in heparin is derived from pig intestines, and because China is a major source some are concerned that the African swine fever outbreak might affect the drug’s availability. The agency says that it will maintain regular contact with U.S. heparin suppliers and manufacturers as the situation evolves.
