Former FDA commissioner **David Kessler**, who is using a popular weight loss drug to deal with the weight he gained while co-leading Operation Warp Speed during the Covid-19 pandemic, says FDA needs to develop a plan for the long-term use of the GLP-1 drugs. “There is no endgame,” he said during an [appearance](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/weight-loss-drugs-warning-data-david-kessler/?ref=fdaweb.com) on *CBS Mornings Plus*. “FDA allowed these medicines out without a long-term strategy.”

Kessler said he started to lose the 40-50 pounds he had gained using a traditional diet, but it ended up being very slow. When he went to an endocrinologist for a kidney stone, the doctor asked if he wanted to try the drug, and he agreed.

“It’s a real journey,” he explained. “You can reclaim your health, but there are no such things as miracle pills.” His appearance was part of a tour to promote his new book, *Diet, Drugs, and Dopamine: The New Science of Achieving a Healthy Weight*.

Kessler said the GLP-1s condition a person’s brain to want less food. “They take you to the edge of nausea,” he said. “Food just stays in your stomach longer, and when food stays in your stomach longer, you’re not going to want to put more food in your stomach.” However, he said, if one stops taking the drugs, that conditioning is likely to fade and the weight will be gained back.

“The premise of the drug companies, you can imagine what they want,” Kessler declared. “They want you to be on this for life.” He said there are currently no data on how to get off the drugs safely or safely go back on them.

“FDA is going to have to require that data,” he said. “We’re just running a national experiment because we don’t have the data.”

The former commissioner said it is important to be under good care when losing weight. “You have to have a doc, you have to have a nutritionist, a dietitian,” he said. “Not everyone can afford that…. That really concerns me.”
