# FDA OKs Moderna Covid Vaccine for Phase 2

FDA has completed its review of a Moderna IND for its mRNA-1273 vaccine candidate to be used against SARS-Cov-2 and has authorized the company to start a Phase 2 study. The company [says](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200507005478/en/Moderna-Reports-Quarter-2020-Financial-Results-Business?ref=fdaweb.com) it hopes to start a pivotal Phase 3 study this summer.

Moderna CEO **Stéphane Bancel** says the company potentially could have its first BLA approved as soon as 2021 and in preparation is accelerating manufacturing scale-up. Bancel says the firm’s partnership with Lonza means it will be able to make and distribute as many mRNA-1273 vaccine doses as possible, should it prove to be safe and effective.
