FDA OKs Updated Covid Vaccines

FDA has approved and given emergency use authorization for updated monovalent Covid-19 mRNA vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer. An agency statement says the updated 2024-2025 vaccines are formulated to correspond to the Omicron variant KP-2 strain of SARS-CoV-2. Updated Covid vaccines more closely target current circulating variants and provide better protection against serious consequences of Covid-19, including hospitalization and death, FDA says.

“Barring the emergence of a markedly more infectious variant of SARS-CoV-2, FDA anticipates that the composition of Covid-19 vaccines will need to be assessed annually, as occurs for seasonal flu vaccines,” the notice says.
